I only just learned about the passing of this lovely, talented man. I was a young wannabee swimmer from Forbes all those years ago and remember so well being in awe of Rex Aubrey and his talent. It was also exciting that his swimming successes brought some 'fame' to the central western area of NSW. Some coincidences too that many years later, playing competitive squash in Boston, I met his close friend, Steve Horn, and learned of his later successes in life. My belated condolences to his family.

I first met Rex in the early 1960s, when he was hired by the DAC. My dad actually was one of the members who interviewed him, and he was hired to fill the shoes of the legendary Clarence "Pinky" Pinkston, who had been the DAC's Athletic Director since the late 1930s. Rex became my coach, my boss, and my friend, and I knew the whole family. I remember well those Sunday afternoon family swims at the DAC where all three Aubrey kids would be running around while Ann coached the many divers she had clamoring for her attention. Many years later, when our son was accepted at Yale in 2004, the phone rang at our house and it was Rex Aubrey congratulating us on this big event. Rex was a wonderful mentor, and I smile every time I think of him, which is often.
