Obituary of Velma Ruth Childress

Velma Ruth Childress passed into the arms of her Lord Jesus on May 29, 2007. Ruth is remembered for her ready, warm smile, generous spirit and kindness to people and animals. She loved her flower and vegetable gardens which she generously shared with family, friends and neighbors. Ruth was a member of the Covenant Baptist Church for 65 years and a longtime member of the church choir. Ruth worked as a teller for First Federal Savings for many years, lastly, in the drive-up window, where her customers appreciated her constant good humor and kind words, witnessed by the many gifts she received during the holidays and upon her retirement. She wrote “Redford Recordings” for the local Redford Record newspaper and was a member of her local chapter of Eastern Star. Ruth was also President of the PTA and a Girl Scout troop leader at the Thomas Houghton Elementary School in Detroit. Velma Ruth Ham was born outside Lewistown, MO on June 4, 1918 then moved to Williamstown, MO where she was the star of her high school basketball team. She moved to Detroit with her husband, Lee, in 1940. After retirement, Ruth enjoyed traveling the United States with Lee for many years in their motor home and visited every state. She took volumes of pictures logging their travels. Ruth is survived by her adoring husband, Charles “Lee” Childress Sr., her loving daughters and sons and their spouses, Lyn Bankes and her husband, John, Charles Childress Jr. and his wife, Dona, Ronald Childress and his wife, Sandra, and Margaret Childress. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 10 and 1/2 great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 14, 2007 at Covenant Baptist Church, 5800 W. Maple Rd., W. Bloomfield, MI at 11AM Oh, how the angels must be singing!
