Obituary of Francis W. Lanard, MD

LANARD, Francis W., MD, Age 91. Born October 7, 1915 Died October 1, 2007 Beloved husband of 64 years to Florence. Loving father of four daughters, Kathleen Fischer (Norman), Gail Smith (Doug), Nancy Warner, Robin Bjelica (Tom). Grandfather of Brandon, Amy, Robert, Michael, Teresa, Tracey, Emily, Anna and one great-grandchild. Francis graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1937 and received his medical degree from Hahnemann Medical School, Philadelphia in 1941. He served his internship at Letterman General Hospital, San Francisco, California. He was a member of the United States Army Medical Corps from July 1, 1942 until his retirement in1964 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His military career included combat service in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands during World War II, and in Japan with the Army of Occupation. Subsequent tours of duty included Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, Idar-Oberstein, Germany, and Wurtzburg, Germany. He was later stationed in Washington, DC with multiple assignments, culminating at the Office of the Surgeon General. After retiring in 1964, he started a new career as medical consultant for Chrysler Corporation. He retired a second time in 1980. Francis (Frank) traveled the world with the military, and after retirement, with his wife and family. He was devoted to his family, encouraged life-long learning, and stayed active throughout his long life. He had the respect and admiration of his family and many friends. He will be greatly missed. Private internment, Great Lakes National Cemetery. Memorial Service, 1:00 PM, Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007, First United Methodist Church of Birmingham. Memorial contributions may be made to the Michigan Humane Society and the First United Methodist Church of Birmingham.
