Obituary of Marilyn June Bellfy

Marilyn June (Gallagher) Bellfy
June 10, 1932 - May 6, 2021

Age 88

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt.

Marilyn was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. She and her husband Grant met in grade school while living across the street from each other. They were married when she was 18 years old and he was 20 and remained happily married for 54 years until his passing in 2005. Together they raised their two children, Susan and Curtis, while Grant was in the Air Force, living in Tampa, FL and Duluth, MN before resettling in Detroit. Marilyn began working as a medical assistant at the age of 13 and continued this career until her retirement. She had a great love for her patients and was a caretaker by nature.

Her family, to whom she was lovingly known as "Ma," was her pride and joy. She spent any time she could watching her kids, grandkids, and eventually great-grandkids at play. She was known for her sweet tooth, frequently seen enjoying a doughnut, jelly beans, or diet Pepsi (caffeine-free, of course). She loved to socialize and would chat with everyone and anyone. She was affectionately nick-named “Chatty Cathy” by the staff at her long-term care facility, who said that if they were having a bad day they would just go chat with Marilyn and her sweet nature would cheer them up.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband Grant, parents Bill and Mollie Gallagher, and brother-in-law Donald Lawrence. She is survived by her children Susan Williams and Curtis (Margaret) Bellfy; grand children Erin (Spencer) McKee, Joshua (Joy) Bellfy, Kellie (Erik) Kornmiller, and Adam Bellfy; great-grandchildren Emma, Hannah, Natalie, Mollie, Owen, Meara, and Mason; sister Elizabeth Lawrence; and many nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen of Detroit, MI or Heart to Heart Hospice of Bingham Farms, MI.
