Obituary of Helen Charlotte Constance
Helen Charlotte Constance (ne Rybka) passed away of natural causes at the age of 97 on Wednesday, February 24 at St. Marys Hospital in Livonia with her son Jerry by her side.
Helen was born on May 21, 1923 in Richmond, MI, to Wanda Rybka (ne Zusga) and Walter Rybka. A first generation Polish American, and one of seven children of immigrants, she grew up on farm in Southeast Michigan, often recalling driving from the family farm in Pinckney to sell their produce in Downtown Detroit. During the war, she worked in a factory, and was an avid traveler with her sisters, taking buses around the Midwest. Eventually she and her sister took a job in Anchorage, Alaska, and on the flight she struck up a conversation with a man she fondly described as "the most interesting man on the plane." A few years later she married him, Robert (Bob) Constance, in July of 1950, and they drove back from Alaska to settle in Redford Township, MI, to raise their family. Helen was a doting mother and homemaker, raising four sons while her husband worked as a fireman at Ford Motor Transmission Plant. She crocheted, sewed quilts, cooked, and gardened, showing love for her family through these tasks. She particularly loved baking, and was known as "the cookie mom" in the neighborhood. She enjoyed a life full of laughter, love, travel, and the great outdoors. In death,
Helen joins her husband Bob, her sons Alan (AC) and Rick (Bronk) Constance, and her brothers and sisters. She is survived by her sons, Patrick Constance and Gerald (Valerie) Constance; three granddaughters, Jolinda Glasco, Rachel Constance Littleton, and Wendy (Justin) Buckles; and four great-Grandchildren, Evan Buckles, Maya Buckles, Lexi Buckles, and Zelda Littleton, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
