Edward "Ray" Powell, aged 63, passed away on August 8, 2024, in Detroit, Michigan. Born on January 27, 1961, in Orrville, Alabama, Ray was known for his charismatic, blunt, and transparent nature. He had a passion for life and a protective, perseverant spirit that endeared him to many.
Ray served honorably in the Army for four years, where his commitment and strong-willed nature earned him a Good Conduct Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Oversea Ribbon, and Sharpshooter Badge with M-16 Rifle Bar. After his military service, he pursued a career as a mechanic, a field where his passion for working on cars flourished. Ray was not only skilled with tools but also possessed a unique ability to connect with those he served, making him a beloved figure in his community.
He attended Keith Middle-High School, where he first developed many of the interests that would stay with him throughout his life. Ray was an avid cook and an enthusiastic lecturer on various topics that piqued his interest. His love for racing cars, watching WWE and westerns, and visiting casinos showcased his diverse interests. Ray also enjoyed playing spades, traveling back to his roots in Alabama, and spending quality time with friends over a drink.
Ray is survived by his children Edricka Powell, Rashemia Powell, Rashana Powell, and Gerald Gandy; the mothers of his children, Pamela Gandy and Tommie Powell; his grandchild, Gavin Gandy; siblings Tara Moultrie, Dianna Moultrie, Freddie Lee (Ethel) Powell, and Julia Powell; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members: Cortnie (Meech), Cortez, Deysia, Diamond, Angelique, Ashley, Danea, Brandy (Roger), Nikita, DeMarcus, Jesse, Patrick, Alfreda, Catherine, Kabrianna, and many more . He was preceded in death by his parents, Rosetta (Rayford) Moultrie and Edward Powell Sr.; brothers Julio Powell and Melvin Powell; nephew Chucky Powell; and aunt Roberta Rayford.
A balloon release will be held in his honor from 3pm to 5pm on September 1, 2024, at Riverside Park. This gathering will celebrate his life and the indelible mark he left on the hearts of those he touched.
