Candace Delattre

January 3, 1950 — June 9, 2024

Candace DeLattre, age 74 – Mezzo Soprano – passed away peacefully on June 9, after several years of declining health. She was born on January 3, 1950 and raised in Flint, Michigan. She attended Michigan State University where she received a Bachelor of Music in 1973 and a master’s in music in 1975. In 1989 she received a degree of Specialist in Music for Voice from the Music School of the University of Michigan.
In 1983, she was a regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions for the Northwest Region (Portland) and won the Medaillon Bronze de Chant Opera in Geneva, Switzerland.
Her performance roles included Schwertleite in Seattle Opera’s production of Wagner’s Die Walkure (1985), Zita and Principessa in IL Trittico with Chamber Opera of Chicago (1985), Mama McCourt in Dayton Opera and Michigan Opera Theatre’s (Detroit Opera) joint production of Ballade of Baby Doe (1988), Marthe in Michigan Opera Theatre’s (Detroit Opera) Faust (1994) and Filipyevna, the Nurse in Michigan Opera Theatre’s (Detroit Opera) Eugene Onegin (1999). She performed at the Spoleto Festival, at Alice Tully Hall in NYC and as a soloist with many regional symphonies including Flint, Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids.
Ms. DeLattre was a respected Detroit-area private vocal coach for over four decades with teaching positions at Oakland University, Flint School of Performing Arts and McClosky Institute of Voice (Massachusetts). She had a long association with Detroit Opera’s Community Programs Department, as a performer (Trouble in Tahiti touring production - 1981), vocal coach and as the Opera Camp Director for the Learning at the Opera House youth summer camp (2006-2013) under the late Karen DiChiera (former Director of Community Programs).
It was the wish of Ms. DeLattre that no memorial would be held on her behalf. Her parents Eugene and Lorraine and sister Natica Petrossian preceded her in death and she leaves behind two nieces, two grand nieces, dear friends and many admiring past voice students.
Gifts in memory of Ms. DeLattre may be given to the Detroit Opera Department of Education and Community Programs.
